Arizona Chamber of Commerce "2005 Arizona Heritage Award Dinner with Senator Kyl" The Arizona Heritage Award honors distinguished individuals whose accomplishments and commitment to Arizona are recognized not only in Arizona but also nationally and internationally. This year the Arizona Chamber of Commerce awarded the honorable Senator Jon Kyl with the 2005 Arizona Heritage Award. On the evening of December 2, at the Scottsdale Camelback Inn Resort and Spa, many Arizona business, government and community leaders joined together to celebrate the distinguished accomplishments and contributions of Senator Kyl. The night began with a VIP Reception where Senator Kyl graciously posed for pictures with family, friends and Arizona leaders. The guests then moved into the ballroom where they found their table setting to have one of the passions of Senator Kyl, a minature race car. Senator Kyl is a NASCAR fanatic who loves the sport of race car driving. The ceremony began and many spoke about Senator Kyl's accomplishments, both nationally and internationally. U.S. Senator John McCain said "The Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry could not choose a more deserving or fitting recipient for its 2005 Heritage Award than Senator Jon Kyl. For the past 20 years he has served the good people of Arizona with incredible distinction in the United States Congress. Senator Kyl has been a steadfast supporter of a sane budget policy since his election to the House of Representatives in 1986. He has also been a prime intellectual mover of a strong defense: from his continued support of a workable missile defense for our nation, to his very valuable work as the chairman of the Terrorism, Technology, and Homeland Security Subcommittee in the United States Senate." C.A. Howlett, Senior Vice President, Public Affairs, U.S. Airways, presented the award, describing Senator Kyl as "smart, dedicated, selfless, hard working, and he maintains absolutely the highest level of character and integrity." United States Representative Jim Kolbe said "Senator Kyl is a great man to be representing Arizona in the U.S. Senate. As a member of the Senate leadership, his senior position and respect of other senators provides our state with a strong voice and influence in Congress." Robert H. Bohannon, Chairman, President & CEO of Viad Corp said "Jon Kyl is 'always honest' even at a time in our country when spin seems to be the driving principle behind too much public speech. How refreshing it is to know that we can always count on Senator Kyl to be forthright, clear and direct." Past recipients of the Arizona Heritage Award include syndicated columnist Erma Bombeck, sports mogul Jerry Colangelo, broadcaster Hugh Downs, U.S. Senator and Arizona Governor Paul Fannin, Hall of Fame broadcaster Joe Garagiola, U.S. Senator Barry Goldwater, cartoonist Bil Keane, U.S. Senator John McCain, Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court Sandra Day O’Connor, businessman/philanthropist Craig Barrett, community leader Betty Rhodes, U.S. Representative John J. Rhodes, Jr., U.S. Representative Bob Stump, businessman Frank Snell and U.S. Representative Mo Udall. The mission of the Arizona Chamber of Commerce is to promote a business climate that enhances economic vitality and improves the quality of life for all Arizonans.
