Banner of Hope "9th Annual Luncheon and Fashion Show"
By Myra Richman
On October 21, 2006, Banner of Hope held their Ninth Annual Luncheon and Fashion Show. Banner of Hope is a local, nonprofit organization founded by six friends in 1998 and dedicated to raising funds for breast cancer prevention, education, treatment and cure.
"It is wonderful that six friends have the ability to pull an event off each year," said Banner of Hope's co-founder Jamye Katz. "It's very fulfilling to write that check and give it to our beneficiary every year knowing that it's going to directly benefit a woman who is facing a diagnosis of breast cancer."
This year's event took place at the Doubletree Paradise Valley Resort. Phoenix TV and radio meteorologist and former State Senator, Ed Phillips, served as master of ceremonies. He also lent a hand in raising funds that will be used by the Phoenix Indian Medical center to bring new and expanded diagnostic services, improve access to treatment and enhance educational services to American Indian and Alaska Native women with at risk for breast cancer.
Dillard's Department Stores of Arizona hosted the fashion show featuring both professional and breast cancer survivor models. Cancer survivor models included Toni Blume, Rebecca Bohstedt, Ana Castillo, Jodi Harris, Jettie Kootman, and Vicki Powers Gustafson.
"Banner of Hope is just that - hope," said Castillo. "Hope that no family will have to go through what my family and I experienced. Hope that no little girl will have to lift her mother out of bed and giver her medication every morning. Hope that one day we can find a cure."
