JUVENILE DIABETES RESEARCH FOUNDATION "PROMISE BALL 2007" PROMISED MUCH....AND DELIVERED MORE
By Myra Richman
The Desert Southwest Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation hosted its 7th annual Promise Ball at the Westin Kierland Resort and Spa on January 27, 2007.
There was plenty to do/see/hear at the black-tie event with dinner and dancing, a live auction, silent auction, casino-style gambling and entertainment by Patti LaBelle. The resort's grand ballroom was transformed into a glaaxy of hope with every detail reflecting the evening's theme, "When You Wish Upon a Star."
The 2007 Living and Giving honorees, Randy and Ken Kendrick, were presented their award by 2006 honorees Heather and Michael Greenbaum.
The Promise Light Honoree, darling five-year-old Anna Alber, did her family proud while grandmother Debbie Berge explained the plight of the lovely child in a touching, heartfelt way.
Many very, very, very generous individuals bid on several outstanding live auction items and helped raise $2.2 million and netted $1.83 million to support the much needed cutting-edge research needed to find a cure for type 1 diabetes and its complications.
The dance floor filled fast and the outstanding gown-of-the-night-award would have to go to former ball chair Penny Nissley.
Thirty-six years ago, a small group of parents, incapable of dreaming of a future without diabetes, created JDRF.
JDRF, the world’s leading nonprofit, nongovernmental funder of diabetes research, was founded in 1970 by the parents of children with juvenile diabetes—a disease which strikes children suddenly, makes them insulin dependent for life, and carries the constant threat of devastating complications. JDRF provided more than $123 million to diabetes research in FY 2006, and is responsible for more than $1 billion in direct funding since it was founded. In a typical year, 85 percent of JDRF’s expenditures directly support research and education about research. Our mission in constant: to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. For more information, visit our website at www.jdrf.org or call 800-533-CURE.
