Arizona Humane Society Celebrates its Annual Fashion Show & Luncheon

By Myra Richman

The Arizona Humane Society's Compassion 2006 "Best in Show" held its 8th event at the Phoenician Resort, where oohs and aahs never stopped throughout the luncheon and fashion show.

A silent auction was held in the lobby off the ballroom, where 1,030 pet lovers (their largest crowd yet) mingled and viewed the beautiful animals ready to be adopted into a loving home.

Then the luncheon and fashion show began. Several contestests dressed themselves and their unsuspecting pets in inventive attire representing different themes, competing for the "Best in Show" title. There was a lot of laughter in the house as the following brave Valley residents walked the runway with their little precious companions: Debbie La Prade; Judy Hewson; Debbie Weber with Rebecca Weber and Robin and Colleen Pyra; Linda Hertzberg; Keith Withycombe; Sherry Martori; Ina Manaster; Sandy Trznadel (a beautiful Marilyn Monroe); Alison Getz with Chip Getz, Katherine Getz, Gregory Vogel and Johnny Vogel; Jacquie Dorrance with Ashley Baiker and Sofia Baiker; Sallie and Julia Najafi; Traci Cornell (accompanied by her two alpacas); and Noel Gosnell...as the Statue of Liberty.

A video of the Arizona Humane Society's pet rescue efforts following Katrina was particularly touching to the audience, sitting in complete silence. Many learned for the first time that more than 280 animals had been saved and brought back to Arizona, landing ar the airport at 10 pm one evening. The AHS and its volunteers managed to reunite at least 70 of the pets with their families, and found countless homes for the rest. This was truly a life-saving mission!

After the event, many made their way to the lobby adoption area to take home a new pet, including Chevy Humphrey, President and CEO of the Arizona Science Center -- a new kitty was a surprise for her daughter.

The Arizona Humane Society is the state's largest nonprofit animal welfare and protection agency. In 2005 alone, the AHS took in more than 40,000 unwanted, sick, abused and injured animals. A private organization, the AHS is supported by donations and does not receive any government funding. The AHS mission is to build healthy relationships between people and animals.
