UMOM New Day Center 21st Annual Children's Charity Golf Event

By Myra Richman

Arizona's largest homeless shelter for families celebrated its 21st anniversary golf tournament and dinner at the Gainey Ranch Golf Club May 5th, for a Cinco de Mayo Fiesta.

More than 200 golfers from Valley corporations, including Cigna HealthCare of Arizona, Kitchell, Best Western, AAA Arizona, Aon of Arizona, Bryan Cave and Southwest Ambulance, played to benefit homeless children at UMOM.

April Warnecke of Channel 3 emceed the event and special visitors included City of Phoenix District 8 Councilman Michael Johnson, kids from UMOM and Chris Newton--the first college graduate from Thomas J. Pappas school. Proceeds from the tournament, silent auction and dinner will support UMOM New Day Centers.

"CIGNA HealthCare is very proud of our sponsorship of the UMOM Children's Charity Golf Tournament," said Jeff Terrill, president and general manager of CIGNA HealthCare of Arizona, the platinum sponsor of the tournament. "UMOM's mission is to provide those in need with food, shelter and tools to build a bridge to self sufficiency falls in line with CIGNA HealthCare's desire to improve the overall quality of life in the communities in which we do business."

UMOM New Day Centers has come to the aid of the community since 1964. Arizona's largest shelter for families, UMOM is a leader in the fight to break the cycle of homelessness. UMOM provides food, shelter and tools to build self-sufficiency, benefiting over 5,000 homeless residents each year. More than half of these residents are children.
