Make-A-Wish Foundation of Arizona Annual Wish Ball - 2007 Destination Joy
By Myra Richman
The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Arizona held its Annual 2007 Wish Ball on Saturday, May 12 at the Hyatt Regency at Gainey Ranch in Scottsdale.
The theme of this year’s black-tie ball was Destination Joy. Guests were able to celebrate the travel-themed event by bidding on vacation packages in the evening’s live and silent auctions, along with dozens of other fabulous items. Always one of the best evenings of the season, with lots of happenings, entertainment and action, the event included cocktails, a champagne opening display, a gourmet dinner, live entertainment, dancing and a moving talk by a former wish recipient.
Now an undergrad at the University of Arizona, and hoping to enter the medical school to study pediatric oncology, former wish kid Katie Corbell charmed the audience, while speaking of the painful times she endured during her illness and how her granted wish of a Caribbean cruise gave her hope and purpose and saved her life. The standing ovation she received was well deserved.
FOX 10's Cory McCloskey managed to have a great time entertaining the crowd, in spite of a bad case of laryngitis. His humor made everyone smile.
The Wish Ball raises money to grant the wishes of local children with life-threatening medical conditions. This year's event, presented by Health Net of Arizona, brought more than 540 guests to the resort to share the power of a wish.
This was the 11th year for the Wish Ball, which is the Foundation’s largest fundraiser. This year’s $300,000 fundraising goal will fulfill the wishes of 45 Arizona children. The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Arizona grants close to 200 wishes each year, with an average cost of $6,000 to fulfill a wish.
